Feelin' groovy...
In an effort to broaden my musical horizons, I've been listening to a best-of CD from Simon and Garfunkel the last few days. Love the harmonies and the guitar work, and the lyrics have a world-weary armchair-philosopher kinda vibe going to them... very nice.
While taking in classic tunes such as "Sound of Silence" (can't understand why it made the VH1/Blender list of worst songs ever), "Scarborough Fair", "Mrs. Robinson", and "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)", I got to thinking about the fact that these were the guys that my parents listened to when they were around my age, back in the 70's. They were some of the big names of the day, and the hit popularity of their recent reunion tour is probably a good indicator of the sense of nostalgia people still have in connection with their music. It's weird to think that at one point, our parents' generation was into the "cool" thing of the time - music, fashion, etc. When we look at the pictures from their youth today, we usually get a good laugh out of the big hair, tight pants and solid brown colors that were prevalent at the time...
For another wave of nostalgia, VH1 this week has been airing a series called "I Love the 90s", with some reviews of what was popular in a particular year. I caught portions of their retrospectives on 1990 and 1991... it's been fun remembering things like "U Can't Touch This", Kris Kross, and a bunch of other music hits, TV shows and news items. And who can forget junior high fashion? I was never able to peg my pants correctly.
Pop culture is so fickle... just think, at some point not long from now, it's going to pass all of us by. One day, perhaps we'll look back on faded haircuts, hip-hop music, and DVDs as relics and our kids will be laughing at the pictures we take today. For that matter, I think pop culture passed me by a long time ago... heheh...
However, it's encouraging to know that quality endures through the ages. Simon and Garfunkel's music is still as catchy, meaningful and beautiful as it was 30 years ago. U2 has been making relevant music for 20-some odd years now. Good jeans last for years. Going back even farther, the majestic compositions of Bach, Beethoven and the rest of all those folks in powdered wigs (the popular music of the day) still hold a high ranking in the prestige listing of the historical music catalog.
Finally, it fills me with a great deal of awe and reverence to consider that God and the Gospel of Christ has endured throughout the ages, in all its beauty and gory detail. God transcends our fickle likes and dislikes, because this particular epoch is just one small chapter in the great big story that He's had planned out since before the ages began. If quality endures, Truth sets the standard - and while we may not understand Truth in all its fullness just yet, it is still a beautiful thing to behold and try to comprehend. Not only that, we still have the anticipation of going from a "poor reflection as in a mirror" (1 Cor. 13:12) to seeing Jesus face to face - and that will be a glorious experience.
Looking back is fun... but looking forward may be even more so.
